Questions that people frequently ask

  1. What is propane?
Propane is a by-product of both natural gas and crude oil refining. Propane is a member of the hydrocarbon family, which also includes natural gas, gasoline and diesel. Like natural gas, propane is in a gaseous state unless it is under pressure. However, while natural gas rises when it is released, propane will sink to the ground if it is released.

Propane is odorless, colorless, tasteless and non-toxic. As a safety precaution, ethyl mercaptan, an odorant that smells like sulfur, is added to propane when it is loaded onto railcars or transports. This odorant helps insure detection in case of a leak.

Generally, all propane is alike, so all retailers are providing essentially the same product. The things that differentiate suppliers are service, safety and reliability.

  2. Is propane environmentally friendly?
Propane burns cleaner than gasoline, diesel and other fossil fuels, because it emits no sulfur dioxide or particulates. If there is an unintentional release of propane in its liquid form, it immediately evaporates without polluting the soil or groundwater.

  3. Is there plenty of propane?
Right now, 88% of the propane we use in the US is produced domestically. This helps reduce our dependency on overseas energy sources. Also, the US has an extensive infrastructure of retail outlets, storage facilities, delivery trucks, railroad tank cars and pipelines, that assures propane can be delivered whenever it is needed.
  4. Who uses propane?
National Propane Gas Association statistics show the following:
    • Industrial sites and petrochemical industries account for 45% of propane usage.
    • Residential and commercial customers consume 37%.
    • Farms account for 13% of propane usage.
    • Propane is the fuel most widely used as an alternative to gasoline and diesel, and this accounts for 4% of the propane usage.
    • 1% is consumed by the gas industry and utilities.
